Best: I Will Follow
This may not be a film you've heard of but "I Will Follow" made its world premiere at the 14th Annual 2010 Urbanworld Film Festival. Starring Salli Richardson and Omari Hardwick from "For Colored Girls," the film profoundly echos the human experience. Directed by the phenomenal Ava DuVernay, "I Will Follow" is a film you must see in 2011.
Worst: John Mayer
John Mayer had a diverse following but after his rant in "Playboy" back in February, he turned off a large amount of his fan base. Mayer said, "My di-k is sort of like a white supremacist. I’ve got a Benetton heart and a fu–in’ David Duke c**k." Soon after, Mayer issued an apology.
Best: Oprah's Final Season
The legendary Oprah Winfrey is closing her final season with the biggest bang in television history. She's given away cars, trips to Australia and even landed interviews with Michael Jackson's children. On January 1st, Winfrey starts her own network, appropriately titled OWN.
Worst: Kanye Apologizing To Pres. Bush
When Mr. West gave the "I'm sorry" to Pres. Bush for saying he doesn't care about Black people, many Kanye fans sighed with disappointment. At the time, Kanye spoke what many, Black or White, felt about Pres. Bush. Never backpedal - no more apologies Kanye!
Best: The Year of Nicki Minaj
Nicki proved she is a force in the entertainment industry. Her debut album,"Pink Friday," has blazed the charts since its release and made Minaj one of the most talked about celebrities of the year. Congrats to Nicki!
Worst: Nicki Minaj Vs. Lil' Kim
Who knows who started it, but the beef between Minaj and Kim is disappointing considering the hard road for female MCs. Hopefully, these two divas will smooth things over in 2011.
Best: Chris Brown
Despite getting a heavy beating from the media, Chris Brown owned up to his mistakes. In December of 2010 he completed a court-ordered 52-week domestic violence course as a result of pleading guilty to assaulting Rihanna in 2008. Congrats to Chris!
Worst: Cheating Tiger
Tiger Woods' cheating ways caught up with him and the entire planet found out. Tiger was outed via text messages and interviews from his alleged mistresses – and the number went as high as 14 – all while he was married. Woods has remained low-key since the scandal broke and he's divorced from his wife, but some wonder if his career is permanently damaged. Nonetheless, America loves a comeback!
Best: 'Precious' Makes History
Mo’Nique became the fifth Black woman to win an Academy Award for acting. She joined the ranks of Hattie McDaniel, Whoopi Goldberg, Halle Berry and Jennifer Hudson. Geoffrey Fletcher became the first African-American to win an Oscar for adapted screenplay for "Precious" and Lee Daniels became the second African American to receive a best director nod. Most importantly, "Precious" sparked a dialogue in America about race, obesity and sexual abuse.
Worst: Rehab Lindsay
Lindsay Lohan has broken the law more times than one can remember with DUIs and probation violations. However, no jail time for Lohan, only rehab. She has been in rehab numerous times and is currently scheduled to be released from the Betty Ford Center, a drug and alcohol treatment center, in early 2011. Good luck to Lindsay in the New Year!
Best: The Return of El DeBarge
After a long hiatus, 49-year-old El DeBarge made his return to music by appearing on the 2010 BET Awards and releasing his new album, "Second Chance." With his falsetto still intact and not having aged a bit, El received two 2011 Grammy nominations. Welcome back, El!
Worst: T.I. Back In Jail
Shortly after T.I.'s "Takers" became the number one movie in the country, he was arrested for drug-related charges. Fans were shocked considering he just got out of jail months before. T.I. is currently back in prison, serving 11 months and is scheduled to be released in September 2011.
Best: Lauryn Hill Returns... Kind of
In the summer of 2010, Lauryn Hill made a slight return by appearing in the Rock the Bells concert series. She brought out the likes of Beyoncé and Jay-Z and hinted there might be a new album in the future. Hill has been teasing us for years - let's hope she makes it happen in 2011!
Worst: Celeb Divorces
Christina Milian and The-Dream, Eva Longoria and Tony Parker, Sandra Bullock and Jesse James - the list is long. Celebs just can't keep it together, but in most cases, the woman gets the last laugh. Bullock split from James and finalized an adoption of a baby from Louisiana, and now she is all smiles!
Best: Ricky Martin Comes Out
After years of speculation Ricky Martin admitted he is a "fortunate homosexual man." He released a best-selling book titled "Me" and did a revealing interview with Oprah. Kudos to anyone who strives to be their authentic self!
Worst: Eddie Long Sex Scandal
After years of preaching against the gay community, Bishop Eddie Long was accused of having sexual relationships with men, some allegedly teenagers. The scandal is still continuing with rumors of an out-of-court settlement in the works.
Best: Goldberg and Behar Walk Off 'The View'
After Bill O'Reilly said, "Muslims killed us on 9/11!" Whoopi Goldberg and Joy Behar were so mortified they walked off stage. It wasn't until O'Reilly apolozed and stressed it was Muslim extremists, not Muslims in general did the two come back on set. Hats off to Joy Behar and the legendary Whoopi Goldberg for taking a stand against bigotry.
Worst: Fantasia's Suicide Attempt
In August of 2010, Fantasia Barrino attempted to commit suicide. It was a media firestorm, especially after the press hounded her over allegedly dating a married man. Thankfully, Fantasia is still here, released her new album, "Back to Me," which received a Grammy nomination, and she is currently on tour.
Best: Babies!
Alicia Keys, Christina Milian and Mario Lopez all had babies born in 2010. Plus, Mariah and Nick Cannon are expecting twins.
Worst: Wesley Snipes in Prison
In December, Wesley Snipes went to prison for three years for three misdemeanor tax-related charges. After a revealing interview with Larry King, it seemed peculiar Snipes was heading to prison, especially considering the jurors never thought he would get jail time for misdemeanors. We wish the best to Snipes and his family.
Best: It Gets Better
Due to bullying and recent teen suicides, especially in the gay community, celebrities took to the web to make "It Gets Better" videos. "It Gets Better" reassured young people that no matter how hard your life is now -- it's worth living. You can never find out how great your life will be if you cut it short. Celebrities like Lala Vazquez, Ciara, Eve and many others lent their voices to the campaign.
