HE execution of Osama Bin Laden by a US hit squad under the noses of the Pakistani army raises alarming questions about the War on Terror.

First, whose side is nuclear-armed Pakistan really on?
How could its sinister secret police be unaware the world's Most Wanted Man was living in luxury a stone's throw from a crack military academy?
If it did know he was there, how can America ever again do business with a regime prepared to harbour the West's deadliest enemy?

The White House last night insisted the sensational killing was carried out without the help or knowledge of the Islamabad authorities.
It quoted President Barack Obama's repeated previous warnings that if Pakistan refused to act on firm evidence, America would go it alone.
Meanwhile, ex-President Pervez Musharraf accused the courageous US Seals of invading sovereign Pakistani air space.
All this suggests America launched the attack on the assumption that its closest ally in the Afghan war was complicit in hiding Bin Laden.
The implications are appalling but not surprising. Britain and America have always known that Pakistan is a treacherous and dangerous ally.
