Gadhafi: Bin Laden Behind Libya Uprising

BENGHAZI, Libya (AP) — Leader Moammar Gadhafi says al-Qaida chief Osama bin Laden is behind the uprising in Libya and al-Qaida followers give young Libyans hallucinogenic pills in their coffee to get them to revolt.

Gadhafi has made the comments in a phone call to Libyan state TV Thursday, expressing condolences for deaths in the city of Zawiya but chiding its residents for joining the rebellion.
He says those revolting are "loyal to bin Laden ... This is al-Qaida that the whole world is fighting."
He says al-Qaida militants are "exploiting" teenagers, giving them "hallucinogenic pills in their coffee with milk, like Nescafe."
Witnesses said 10 people were killed when pro-Gadhafi forces attacked opponents at a mosque in Zawiya, east of Tripoli.
THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.
BENGHAZI, Libya (AP) — Army units and militiamen loyal to Moammar Gadhafi struck back against rebellious Libyans who have risen up in cities close to the capital Thursday, attacking a mosque where many were holding an anti-government sit-in and battling with others who had seized control of an airport. A doctor at the mosque said 10 people were killed.
The assaults aimed to push back a revolt that has moved closer to Gadhafi's bastion in the capital, Tripoli. The uprising has already broken away nearly the eastern half of Libya and unraveled parts of Gadhafi's regime.
In the latest blow to the Libyan leader, a cousin who is one of his closest aides, Ahmed Gadhaf al-Dam, announced that he has defected to Egypt in protest against the regime's bloody crackdown against the uprising, denouncing what he called "grave violations to human rights and human and international laws."
In Zawiya, 30 miles (50 kilometers) west of Tripoli, an army unit attacked the city' Souq Mosque, where regime opponents had been camped for days in a protest calling for Gadhafi's ouster, a witness said. The soldiers opened fire with automatic weapons and hit the mosque's minaret with fire from an anti-aircraft gun, he said. Some of the young men among the protesters, who were inside the mosque and in a nearby lot, had hunting rifles for protection.
A doctor at a field clinic set up at the mosque said he saw the bodies of 10 dead, shot in the head and chest, as well as arond 150 wounded.
The witness said that a day earlier an envoy from Gadhafi had come to the city and warned protesters, "Either leave or you will see a massacre." Zawiya is a key city near an oil port and refineries.
After Thursday's assault, thousands massed in Zawiya's main Martyrs Square by the mosque, shouting "leave, leave," in reference to Gadhafi, the witness said. "People came to send a clear message: We are not afraid of death or your bullets," he said.
The other attack came at a small airport outside Misrata, Libya's third largest city, where rebel residents claimed control Wednesday. Militiamen with rocket-propelled grenades and mortars barraged a line of them who were guarding the airport, some armed with automatic rifles and hunting rifles, said one of the rebels who was involved in the battle.
During the fighting, the airport's defenders seized an anti-aircraft gun used by the militias and turned it against them, he said. He said dead and wounded had been taken to Misrata hospitals but could not give exact figures.
The militias pulled back in the late morning. In Misrata, the local radio — controlled by the opposition like the rest of the city — called on residents to march to the airport to reinforce it, said a woman who lives in downtown Misrata.
In the afternoon, it appeared fighting erupted again, she said, reporting heavy booms from the direction of the airport on the edge of the city, located about 120 miles (200 kilometers) east of Tripoli.
She and other witnesses around Libya spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisals.
Gadhafi's crackdown has so far helped him maintain control of Tripoli, a city that holds about a third of Libya's 6 million population. But the uprising has divided the country and threatened to push it toward civil war: In cities across the east, residents rose up and overwhelmed government buildings and army bases, joined in many cases by local army units that defected. In those cities, tribal leaders, residents and military officers have formed local administrations, passing out weapons looted from the security forces' arsenals.
The leader's cousin, Gadhaf al-Dam, is one of the most high level defections to hit the regime so far, after many ambassadors around the world, the justice minister and the interior minister all sided with the protesters.
Gadhaf al-Dam belonged to Gadhafi's inner circle, officially his liaison with Egypt, but he also served as Gadhafi's envoy to other world leaders and frequently appeared by his side.
In a statement issued in Cairo on Thursday, Gadhaf al-Dam said he had left Libya for Egypt "in protest and to show disagreement" with the crackdown.
Gadhafi's control now has been reduced to the northwest corner around Tripoli, the southwest deserts and parts of the center. The uprisings in Misrata, Zawiya and several small towns between the capital and Tunisian border have further whittled away at that bastion.
The Zawiya resident said that until Thursday's attack, Gadhafi opponents held total sway in the city after police fled days earlier. Residents had organized local watchgroups to protect government buildings and homes.
The capital, Tripoli, saw an outbreak of major protests against Gadhafi's rule earlier this week, met with attacks by militiamen that reportedly left dozens dead.
Pro-Gadhafi militiamen — a mix of Libyans and foreign mercenaries — have clamped down on the city since the Libyan leader went on state TV Tuesday night and called on his supporters to take back the streets. Residents say militiamen roam Tripoli's main avenues, firing the air, while neighborhood watch groups have barricaded side streets trying to keep the fighters out and protesters lay low.
At the same time, regular security forces have launched raids on homes around the city. A resident in the Ben Ashour neighborhood said a number of SUVs full of armed men swept into his district Wednesday night, broke into his neighbor's home and dragged out a family friend as women in the house screamed. He said other similar raids had taken place on Thursday in other districts.
"Now is the time of secret terror and secret arrests. They are going to go home to home and liquidate opponents that way, and impose his (Gadhafi's) control on Tripoli," said the witness.
Another Tripoli resident said armed militiamen had entered a hospital, searching for protesters among the injured. He said a friend's relative being treated there escaped only because doctors hid him.
International momentum has been building for action to punish Gadhafi's regime for the bloodshed.
President Barack Obama said the suffering in Libya "is outrageous and it is unacceptable," and he directed his administration to prepare a full range of options, including possible sanctions that could freeze the assets and ban travel to the U.S. by Libyan officials.
French President Nicolas Sarkozy raised the possibility of the European Union cutting off economic ties.
Another proposal gaining some traction was for the United Nations to declare a no-fly zone over Libya to prevent it using warplanes to hit protesters. U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay said that if reports of such strikes are confirmed, "there's an immediate need for that level of protection."
Italy's Foreign Minister Franco Frattini said estimates of some 1,000 people killed in the violence in Libya were "credible," although he stressed information about casualties was incomplete. The New York-based Human Rights Watch has put the death toll at nearly 300, according to a partial count.
Gadhafi's son Seif al-Islam claimed Thursday that the reported death tolls have been exaggerated, although he didn't provide his own figure. In a press conference aired on state TV, he said the number killed by police and the army had been limited and "talking about hundreds and thousands (killed) is a joke."
He also said a committee had been formed to investigate alleged foreign involvement in the protests.
Earlier Thursday, Libyan TV showed Egyptian passports, CDs and cell phones purportedly belonging to detainees who had allegedly confessed to plotting "terrorist" operations against the Libyan people. Other footage showed a dozen men lying on the ground, with their faces down, blindfolded and handcuffed. Rifles and guns were laid out next to them.

Jermaine Dupri Weighs In On The Grammy Voting

When Steve Stoute wrote his $40,000 advertorial for the New York Times, which articulated his dissenting opinion of the Grammy's voting process, it probably didn't occur to most that he was talking about Jermaine Dupri. Well, not really. But, in actuality, kind of.
Photo by Alberto E. Rodriguez/Getty Images
Jermaine Dupri used to serve as a member of Atlanta's NARAS board, and has been able to influence both the Grammy nominees and the winners in the past. But while Stoute complains about a flawed process that has often neglected the hip-hop community and shut out what is essentially pop culture, JD knows firsthand what it is to try to do something about it.
“Not only was I the youngest person in the room, but I was the only valid Hip Hop person in the room," Dupri said in a video posted on his Global14 blog. “We have so many young, black executives that claim they’re executives, and say they do this. But they’re not out here doing the work. It should be more people like Steve Stoute on that board.”
Dupri quit NARAS back in 2004 in a protest after his then-girlfriend Janet Jackson's wardrobe malfunction, but he encourages urban artists to get involved with NARAS to be able to have some influence in the nominations.

THERE'S been one of those scary near-misses involving two planes - and VICTORIA BECKHAM had a very lucky escape.

She nearly spent an 11-hour flight to LA sharing the benefits of Virgin Atlantic Upper Class with somebody she can't stand - KATIE PRICE.
Posh being Posh, she was booked on a number of planes out of Heathrow yesterday but opted to skip Virgin - without knowing Katie was on it, presumably - for an Air New Zealand flight which left a little later.
So instead of having to pretend to be asleep for nearly half a day she got the chance to have a natter with fellow traveller CHERYL COLE instead.
Result.

Gaddafi ordered the Lockerbie bombing

EVIL Libyan dictator Colonel Gaddafi personally ordered the Lockerbie jet bombing, a former top aide sensationally revealed yesterday.

Gaddafi's ex-justice minister said he could prove the brutal tyrant was behind the deaths of 270 people when Pan Am Flight 103 blew up over the Scottish town on December 21 1988.
The confession came as hundreds of Britons desperately tried to escape riot-hit Libya today after a Government rescue mission turned to shambles.

Weary Brits who did getaway said the country was "descending into hell".
Prime Minister David Cameron this morning apologised for a string of problems that have thwarted efforts to get Brits out of the danger zone.
He said: "What I want to say to those people is I am extremely sorry.
"It is a very difficult picture in Libya. This is not an easy situation."
A total of 262 British nationals have now escaped the chaos on chartered and military aircraft.
But there are fears for the 170 or so workers trapped in the desert - amid speculation special forces may be deployed to rescue them.
Some 132 people have already arrived in Malta on board a plane chartered by the Foreign Office and 79 landed at Gatwick earlier today on a flight organised by BP.

The latest flight, an RAF Hercules, took off from Tripoli airport bound for Malta with 51 British nationals on board this afternoon. Meanwhile, HMS Cumberland is docked in the city of Benghazi waiting to evacuate at least 70 Britons by sea. It could take "upwards of 150" people in total, including foreign nationals, as a degree of international co-ordination emerges.
Defence Secretary Liam Fox said it was not clear where everyone was and it was a "constantly changing picture".
Hated Gaddafi hit the airwaves earlier today and challenged fellow Libyans to quell the protests bringing chaos to the country.

VIOLENCE spreads as Brits continue desperate bid to return home
In a rambling address apparently by telephone to state television, he said: "I call on the people of Libya to get out of their houses and confront this bunch of people.
"If they are not brave enough to go out and face this enemy on the street, maybe they should let their women and their daughters go out."
He appeared to link the protesters, whom he dubbed "our children", with al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden and Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood.
Yesterday Mustafa Abdel-Jalil, who recently quit as justice minister in protest at the regime's violent crackdown on anti-government demos, said Gaddafi ordered Abdelbaset al-Megrahi to plant the bomb that killed 259 people on the plane over Lockerbie and 11 on the ground.
Al-Megrahi, 58, is the only person convicted of the atrocity. He was jailed in 2001 but controversially freed on compassionate grounds in 2009 because he is dying of cancer.

Abdel-Jalil made his dramatic accusation in a Swedish newspaper. He said: "I have proof that Gaddafi gave the order about Lockerbie. To hide it, he did everything in his power to get al-Megrahi back from Scotland."
Abdel-Jalil has not so far provided proof.

Gaddafi accepted Libya's responsibility for the bombing and paid compensation. But he has never admitted personal responsibility.
The shocking revelation that he gave the fatal order sparked fury last night among families of victims.
Bob Monetti, of New Jersey, US, whose son died, said: "There is no question who ordered it. I can't wait to see Gaddafi hanging by his heels."
Whitehall documents reveal Gordon Brown's Labour government did "all it could" to have al-Megrahi returned to Libya to help seal a BP oil deal and improve relations.
Mr Brown and his predecessor Tony Blair were both pictured shaking hands with Gaddafi.
At Gatwick Airport today passenger Helena Sheehan, 66, described the wait for rescue as "some of the worst hours of her life", before adding: "Libya is descending into hell."
Jan McKeogh, also arriving from Libya, said she had heard tales of some "absolute atrocities" in the country that were too upsetting to describe.
She continued: "Monday night was the turning point for us.

"Chinooks flew over our house and there were machine gun blasts shortly afterwards. "It's usually a very, very safe area but there were absolute maniacs over there."
The conflict in Libya has caused outrage around the world after Gaddafi began massacring his own people - with as many as 10,000 claimed dead.

More than 30,000 Tunisians and Egyptians have fled to their home countries from Libya since Monday. Attempts to rescue Brits stranded in the country had been branded a fiasco by furious families desperate to get their loved ones back home.
The first chartered airliner was belatedly due to fly out yesterday afternoon but BROKE DOWN on the tarmac at Gatwick.

Plans to send out a giant C17 military transport jet were then SCRAPPED at the last minute - for fear of provoking crazed tyrant Colonel Gaddafi. Meanwhile the Royal Navy rescue frigate HMS Cumberland had remained STUCK out at sea - frightened of dropping anchor in Libya.
Foreign Secretary William Hague also apologised today for the delays.
He told the BBC: "I am very sorry to those people who couldn't get out yesterday.
"Three planes were meant to go out yesterday morning and, for a variety of reasons that I found infuriating but nonetheless we have to deal with, none of those planes were able or willing to take off."

LILY ALLEN has lashed out at US rapper KANYE WEST after he posted an unsavoury Tweet about abortion.

The singer was left devastated last November when she lost her second baby in two years.
And she was quick to vent her fury when Kanye suggested some women may have abortions to secure a pay-off.
He wrote: "An abortion can cost a ballin' n**** up to 50gs maybe a 100.
"Gold diggin' b****** be getting pregnant on purpose. #STRAPUP my n*****!"
Lily's angry reponse was: "Never has a tweet put me in such a bad mood.
"This is wrong on so many levels."
The furious exchange came just six months after Lily stuck up for the oddball rapper and his bizarre online rants.
Last September she wrote: "Cheer up Kanye. We all still love you!
"It's really no big deal bro (sic). One little mistake, massively blown out of proportion. You're being WAY too hard on yourself."

She has referred to him as "the love of my life".

BEYONCE'S controversial photoshoot, which saw her face darkened and daubed in face paint, has been defended by the magazine that shot them.

The Halo star appeared in L'Officiel Paris in designer dresses, including one designed by her mother, in an African Queen themed 90th anniversary issue but the mag claims that she was "voluntarily darkened".
And they said that the entire shoot was a tribute to the star's "African roots"
"The designs are all reflective of the African influence on fashion this season," the magazine said in a statement. "As for the artistic make-up, the inspiration came from several African rituals during which paint is used on the face."

Faith Evans Takes An Unusual Road to the Grammys

Faith Evans made a name for herself as a singer-songwriter. In addition to her own material, she’s also written for other artists like Usher and Mary J. Blige. But the tables sort of turned on “Gone Already,” which has earned the singer a Grammy nomination for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. The single was actually co-written by Calvin Haggins, Ivan Barias, Corey Williams, Jonathan Smith and Ryan Toby, of City High fame.
“The song was 85 percent what it is; it was fully written and it was actually demoed by a male,” Faith told BET.com. “And I heard it and I knew it was a catchy song. I basically changed the key first, just kinda rearranged it, changed a couple of words here and there, rearranged the hook to make it more like if I had written it. When I heard it I [could] tell they wrote it with me in mind. It just wasn’t my key, but I always knew it was a good record. It’s just great to see that other people like what I did with it.”
Making someone else’s song her own wasn’t much of a stretch for Faith. She always keeps an open mind when writing her own music. “I always try and work with other writers for the most part,” she explained. “I mean, even if it’s a song that I completely already conceived. I’m open for ideas, and on the other side, it also helps people kinda get their name out there. Not that these guys in particular with ‘Gone Already’ needed that. I’m not opposed to working with someone. If it’s a hit record, then why would I turn it down?”
Will Faith win her second Grammy award? Find out when the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards air this Sunday, February 13, at 8 pm EST.

Party pad... Justin with mum Pattie

THE credit crunch has created a generation of stay-at-home twenty somethings.

But cash-rich teen JUSTIN BIEBER can't wait to fly the nest.
The 16-year-old Canadian, who lives with mum PATTIE and his grandparents, is house-hunting in Los Angeles.
And he has his eye on a £1million, four bedroom apartment in the Westwood area of the city, with three bathrooms, a communal swimming pool and spa.
The building also includes a 'party room' for those nights when he feels like letting his hair down with his pals.
Although it will be five years before he can legally crack a beer.
Reports say that Pattie has been helping her son look his first property and likes the Westwood flat.
No doubt she's earmarked a spare room for herself too.
Justin's spokesperson confirmed he was planning the move, saying: "Justin is looking for a house. But nothing has been purchased as of right now."

Teen pop sensation Justin Bieber is reportedly eyeing up this swanky home in Los Angeles, California. According to US blogs, the pint-size pop star is close to buying the $1.7 million condo in the Westwood area. The condo has three bedrooms, four bathrooms and is 2,400 square feet.

The Baby singer, rumoured to be worth over £40 million, has thanked fans for his double nomination at the forthcoming Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards, where he is up for Favourite Male Singer and Favourite Song for Baby.
He said: "My life was changed by fans and by kids like me clicking on my videos and letting me chase a dream. Once again those same kids are there and I am forever grateful.
