SHAWNEE, Kansas. -- More than 30 residents of a Shawnee apartment building were displaced Monday after a fire Monday afternoon.
The residents all live at the Westbrook Apartments near 75th Street and Flint Road and the fire began shortly before 4:30 p.m.
The Shawnee fire marshal said the fire started in the basement, an area that houses all of the furnaces and hot water heaters for the apartments.
The fire was contained to the basement, but seven units were damaged by smoke. But those rest of the building also lost power, because there is only one transformer and one water meter for all 14 units.
The Red Cross assisted 37 people.
"There were a lot of children and women and old people coming out of their houses with blankets, and only that. They left everything in their houses," neighbor Jay Haule said.

The fire marshal said it looked like the residents in the undamaged units will be able to return Tuesday and that utilities should be restored by then. He was unsure of how long those in the damaged units would be displaced.
Fire crews have not pinpointed a specific cause to the fire yet, but said it looks accidental.
