More often than not, releasing a chart-topping single isn't enough to earn stripes in hip-hop.
Just ask Soulja Boy. His lead single, "Crank That," reigned on Billboard's Hot 100 for seven non-consecutive weeks, broke ringtones records and ushered in the biggest hip-hop dance of the new millenium. Still, most dissmissed SB as a fad, a one hit wonder whose 15 minutes was running out quickly.
Soulja's naysaysers appeared to have when his second album, "iSouljaBoyTellem," failed to match the platinum success of its predecessor. But, right as critics were writing SB off, the LP produced two smash singles, "Kiss Me Thru the Phone" featuring Sammie, which went on to peak at no.3 on the Billboard Charts, and "Turn My Swag On," which plateaued at no. 19.
Now, on his third LP, "The DeAndre Way," Soulja remembers first proving his haters wrong.
"You know to prove everybody I wasn't a one hit wonder and to have longevity in the game, and to be on my third album, major album from interscope records, it says a lot," SB told BET.com. "And it make me feel good to have people who had mixed emotions about me at first, now they wanna come and work with me. It feels real good, I'm humbled , I just hope I can keep winining over people and keep winning respect."
