Steve Harvey Brings Mentoring Movement to New York

There’s a movement of mentoring going on and Monday night, Centric’s own Steve Harvey brought it to New York City. During the Red Carpet Gala at Cipriani’s, The Steve Harvey Foundation raised funds for a 10-city mentoring tour for young men ages 13-18. In each city, 100 young men will participate in a 3-day program designed to teach them the principles of manhood. Harvey told the fashionable crowd of 500 that his purpose was to transform these young men into good perspective husbands and fathers, which would in turn create a stronger family unit.

Harvey says the idea of doing a gala was his wife Majorie’s suggestion (she didn’t disappoint on the red carpet with a unique Valentino strapless dress with a huge bow). But the best-selling author and comedian also made it known that although it was a fancy venue and everyone looked good, it wasn’t the usual “tight butt cheek” gala and encouraged the crowd to loosen up and show more love for his jokes.

Award-winning “Good Morning America” anchor Robin Roberts co-hosted the event with Harvey and helped pass out awards to Ms. Pam El, State Farm, Marketing Vice President; Geoffery Canada, President, The Harlem Children’s Zone; and Academy Award winner, Denzel Washington. Denzel arrived a little late; sources say he was finishing his Broadway show “Fences” earlier in the night. To the surprise of the audience and Steve Harvey, Denzel and his wife Paulette personally donated $1 million to The Foundation.

The evening ran a bit long, so when Grammy Award-winning songstress Toni Braxton began serenading with some of her big hits, the crowd began to dissipate a bit, but Toni looked dazzling.
