Don’t bid farewell to our 2018 World Cup dream

Cheer leaders ... Becks and Wayne Rooney back bid

FOOTBALL superstar David Beckham last night backed a Sun campaign to save England's 2018 World Cup bid.

We are calling on readers to sign a petition urging soccer's bosses to ignore the Lord Triesman scandal - and judge England fairly.

Ex-England captain Becks, 35, said: "I'm incredibly proud of our country. It was an honour to present the bid to FIFA president Sepp Blatter.

"We have everything in place to host an amazing World Cup.

"I believe passionately in our bid and I know our fans feel the same way. We have a great chance to bring the world's biggest event to our country and everyone should show support."

Becks handed over the official bid to the international soccer body last Friday.

But a shadow was cast over the bid after FA chairman Lord Triesman was caught on tape accusing Spain and Russia of plotting to bribe referees at next month's 2010 World Cup finals in South Africa.

He implied that in return for Russian help, Spain would back their bid to be 2018 hosts.

The Sun wants international football officials to realise how serious England is about hosting the finals for the first time since our historic 1966 victory.

To do that we need YOUR help. We will deliver your online signatures to FIFA's Zurich HQ.

Politicians and celebs flocked to back England yesterday.

Prime Minister David Cameron said: "The new Government is absolutely behind England's 2018 bid."

Gavin and Stacey star James Corden, 31, said: "The bid is not about who is FA chairman, it's about die-hard fans getting behind the campaign.

"England is ready to host a tournament of this stature tomorrow. We have great stadiums and infrastructure. It shouldn't be derailed."

Ex-England manager and Sun columnist Terry Venables added: "Every English football fan dreams of seeing the World Cup here again."

England legend Paul Gascoigne said: "This is the home of football. We've a great bid."

Cricket star Freddie Flintoff said: "I am proud to show my support for England's bid."

Britain's Got Talent judge Amanda Holden said: "Fans deserve to see the beautiful game played on home turf."

Colleague Piers Morgan added: "It would be outrageous if silly remarks prevented the World Cup coming here. This country created modern football."

Formula 1 hero Jenson Button said: "It's about our country's passion and love for football."

X Factor winner Joe McElderry said: "Let nothing get in the way of our bid. England can host a wonderful World Cup."

Kasabian rocker Tom Meighan said: "The bid isn't about men in suits, it's about fans. Bring football home."

We launched our petition after the FIFA ethics committee announced an investigation into Triesman's comments.

He stepped down as FA chairman and as head of the 2018 bid.

The FA's acting chief executive Alex Horne said: "We are at a crucial time. Support of the fans has never been more important."

FIFA will announce the 2018 hosts in December.
