School Visit
The First Ladies pose with students at Duke Ellington School of the Arts in D.C. Students at the arts school performed modern and classic selections by several American artists, including George Gershwin, Duke Ellington and Billy Joel. More Bilateral Meetings
The president continued meeting with leaders at the G-20 Summit on Sunday. He met with the president of Indonesia, where he expressed his wish to finally visit the nation as president (he’s had to cancel two planned trips there). He also met with leaders from, India and Japan. After holding a press conference in the evening, he headed back to D.C.
Briefings
On Monday morning, the president received his daily presidential and economic briefings at the White House. He will then meet with senior advisors in the Oval Office.
Bi-partisan Meeting
The president will meet with a group of Republican and Democratic senators to discuss energy and climate legislation on Tuesday.
Welcoming King Abdullah
Then, later in the day the president will welcome King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia to the White House. The two leaders will reportedly discuss peace in the Middle East, security of the Gulf and other common concerns.
Presidential Town Hall
On Wednesday, the president will head to Wisconsin to hold a town hall meeting on the economy. The meeting will be held at Racine Memorial Hall. He’ll return to D.C. later that evening.
White House Meetings
On Thursday and Friday the president will attend meeting at the White House.
Statement on Byrd
The nation’s longest serving Senator, Robert C. Byrd, passed away Monday morning at a Virginia hospital. The president released a statement praising the political icon after his passing: “ He scaled the summit of power, but his mind never strayed from the people of his beloved West Virginia….He held the deepest respect of members of both parties, and he was generous with his time and advice, something I appreciated greatly as a young senator.” Obama is expected to attend the funeral services.
Michelle Obama to Speak at NAACP
It was announced last week that the First Lady will speak at this year’s NAACP Convention in Kansas City in July. The NAACP had invited President Barack Obama to address the convention, which will be held July 10-15. But the president will be in Kansas City on July 8 — two days before the convention — for a fundraiser for Democratic Senate candidate Robin Carnahan.
