The Canadian rapper, whose real name is Aubrey Drake Graham, released his long-awaited debut, 'Thank Me Later,' yesterday and his jam-packed day turned into mayhem.
After signing some 1200 autographs at New York's Union Square Best Buy location, for adoring fans, who camped out overnight for the chance to meet him, he headed over to the South Street Seaport to perform a free concert.
Only thing is New York City Police Department officials had already shut down the event before the Young Money recording artist even hit the stage.
"I'm disappointed the police told me to turn around," Drake told New York DJ Funkmaster Flex last night.
Various sources have reported that the expected 10,000-attendee crowd was closer to 25,000. The Pier 17 outdoor shopping/concert area turned unruly quick after chairs were thrown into the crowd from a second-floor balcony, a few fistfights broke out and mace was sprayed. Then, the Seaport management got the police department involved to shut things down.
The former 'Degrassi' star took to his Twitter page to write, "To all the devoted fans that came out I wish you could have seen what I had planned! Until next time..."
"Unfortunately, by the announced showtime, both the Seaport management and NYPD estimated that the on-site crowd had greatly exceeded this safe capacity, was still rising and the show could no longer be presented in a safe atmosphere."
There were no serious injuries, and only two people were arrested. All in all, a victory for what could have been chaotic end to the evening.
Drake didn't let that keep him from partying it up.
Joined by Cash Money head Birdman, and the rest of his Young Money crew, the six-time 2010 BET Awards nominee hit the Meatpacking district restaurant 5Ninth to pop a few bottles with some close industry friends and fans alike and stayed until the wee hours of the morning.
