Sol returns to Arsenal

CAMPBELL ... Arsenal return

SOL CAMPBELL looks set to complete a shock return to Arsenal.

The defender quit the club in 2006 but has been training with Arsene Wenger's side in a bid to maintain his fitness after leaving Notts County in September.

SunSport understands talks between him and Wenger are ongoing over a deal which could see him sign a contract to play for the Gunners until the end of the season.

Campbell has been named in their squad for the reserve team game against West Ham tonight at Upton Park.

Speaking last week, Wenger said: "Sol has a fantastic attitude and good fitness.

"Of course he is not the youngest, but he is in a very good shape. He can still play in the Premier League, I've said that many times.

"He is important in the dressing-room as well. He's positive with the young players.

"Every year we have one or two like that and I think a Premier League club will sign him."

The former England international first joined Arsenal from North London rivals Tottenham on a free transfer in 2001.

He went on to win five major honours in his time there, including two Premier League titles and three FA Cups.

But the centre-back left the Emirates in July 2006 after claiming he was in need of a fresh challenge.

A three-year stay at Portsmouth followed, where he was part of the side which won the FA Cup in 2008.

But Campbell parted company with the Fratton Park outfit last summer and shocked the football world by agreeing to join League Two side Notts County in July.

However, the move soured and he walked out on the club just two months later, having played in only one game for County.

Since then, he has been training with Arsenal's first team and his performances have clearly been good enough to convince Wenger to give him a second chance.

Earlier this week, Arsenal goalkeeper Manuel Almunia urged Wenger to re-sign the 35-year-old to bolster their squad.

The Spanish stopper said: "For Arsenal, any help from a player like Sol would be very welcome.

"Having him at Arsenal would mean there are more players fighting for places in the team.

"Sol is desperate to play football again and doing that for Arsenal would be absolutely fantastic."
