Torrment for latest Kop hero

ANFIELD ANGUISH ... Fernando Torres

FERNANDO TORRES last night sent out a despairing plea to Liverpool's owners: You must buy quality players to stop the rot.

The Kop kings have slumped to eighth in the table and are already EIGHT points off a Champions League spot.

In a frank and brutally honest ]assessment of what is going wrong at Anfield, Torres admits there is little hope in sight.

And the Spanish hitman fears Liverpool's problems cannot be solved because Yank owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett have not got money to spend.

He said: "Obviously we need players. We don't have a big squad and if we can bring quality players, it should be really positive for us.

"But I think the situation is really difficult because I think we don't have money to bring in the best players.

"So we have to think that we are the squad that we have now and if we can bring in players perfect. If not we can't do anything about it."

It is an astonishing admission and will increase the turmoil at Anfield.

The pressure is firmly on boss Rafa Benitez but Torres added: "He has the confidence of the executive director so there's nothing to talk about there.

"I think sacking the manager is not a solution. The manager is not playing. The players have to find a solution."
