20 die as snow hell hits

Snowdrifts ... help for stuck car in Iowa

THE first major snowstorms of winter blasting across America had left at least 20 dead by last night.
Blizzards and drifts 15ft deep caused chaos from the midwest to the east coast, with killer road conditions and hundreds of flights cancelled.

Most of the deaths were caused by car crashes, with one woman in Nebraska killed when a snowplough slammed into her.

The state recorded its heaviest snowfall for 50 years, with soldiers called out in neighbouring Iowa to help cops haul 200 stranded vehicles from ditches.

A bus overturned in New York state, injuring ten, while 30in of snow was reported as far south as Arizona.

Weathermen said it had been "a real big season-opening storm".
