Apoel Nicosia 0 Chelsea 1

MY HERO... Juliano Belletti hugs Nicolas Anelka

CHELSEA won their stroll in Cyprus but were far from convincing.
Nicolas Anelka set the Blues on their way with a first-half goal, looping a long-range shot over the Apoel keeper after good approach work on the right wing from Juliano Belletti.

The French striker had scored the only goal of their opening Champions League group game at home to Porto and looked capable of scoring more here.

It was hardly the resounding return to form that boss Carlo Ancelotti was looking for after the weekend defeat at Wigan. But a win's a win.

The Blues could and should have had more goals to show for their relatively comfortable first-half stroll.

Apoel had drawn their opening Group D game at Atletico Madrid but never posed much of a threat to Petr Cech's goal.

But despite a bright opening period, Chelsea's first clear-cut chance came after nine minutes, Michael Essien sending his 20-yard drive wide of the right-hand post.

A few minutes later it was Frank Lampard's turn to be wasteful, putting no weight into his shot from distance after a slip up by Chrysostomos Michail.

Florent Malouda was the next Chelsea player to be shaking his head in disbelief after failing to respond in any meaningful manner after the ball fell to him in the penalty area.

It was left to Anelka to break the deadlock in the 18th minute.

Belletti burst down the right flank before cutting inside. While most Chelsea players had sprinted into the box, Anelka had checked his run and lurked at the edge of the penalty area.

Belletti spotted the France international and laid back a perfect pass for Anelka to sidefoot a crisp, high drive into the far side of the goal.

It was Anelka's fourth goal of the season but sparked a period of tepid football.

Much as Apoel couldn't keep possession, Chelsea failed to do much with it although they dominated right up to half-time.

Lampard did provide a moment of quality on 41 minutes, a reverse pass finding a sprinting Ashley Cole but the full-back failed to pick out Anelka with his cross.

Just before the break a little frustration spilled over and Salomon Kalou was booked for clattering into Nectarious Alexandrou.

Although Apoel were a bit more sprightly in the second half, it wasn't until the 65th minute that Cech was called on to make his first real save.

Midfielder Savvas Poursaitides swept up Malouda's poor defensive header and burst into the Chelsea area, but Cech used his feet to stifle the threat.

Ashley Cole was called on to head a dangerous cross away for a corner before Blues chief Ancelotti decided to bring on Deco for Belletti.

Although Apoel rallied late, Chelsea held on to seal their second win in two group games.

Man Utd 2 Wolfsburg 1 in UEFA

DOWN AND OUT ... MIchael Owen hits the deck shortly before he hobbled off

MICHAEL CARRICK hit the winner and Michael Owen limped off as United came from behind to seal another Champions League win.

German champions Wolfsburg huffed and puffed but they failed to blow Alex Ferguson's house down and the Red Devils sit proudly on top of Group B with maximum points.

It wasn't a vintage night at Old Trafford and it took a headed goal from Wolfsburg's giant Edin Dzeko in the 55th minute to spark United into life.

A freakish deflection from a Ryan Giggs' free-kick got them level three minutes later before Carrick's composed side-foot clincher with quarter of an hour left.

The evening had started with all expectant eyes at Old Trafford - including those of England manager Fabio Capello - on Michael Owen.

But the striker, who had stated his intentions to impress the Italian prior to the game, barely touched the ball before he hobbled off with a groin injury after 20 uneventful minutes.

The early switch looked precautionary for Owen but it made for the early arrival of Dimitar Berbatov, who became the fulcrum for everything United created in the first half.

Within five minutes he had crafted a glorious chance for Antonio Valencia, but the Ecuador winger dragged his shot wide after latching on to the Bulgarian's deft touch.

Berbatov was at his magical best again on the half-hour, slipping Michael Carrick through only for Diego Benaglio to block with his right leg.

United were far from their best but at least were beginning to create chances.

Berbatov couldn't control his half-volley from a Giggs' lobbed cross.

And Wayne Rooney produced a weak side-foot finish when again set-up by the silky Bulgarian.

After Ben Foster's shaky performances, Tomasz Kuszczak got the nod in goal but he barely had a save to make as Wolfsburg's free-scoring strike partnership of Dzeko and Grafite failed to make an impression early on.

However, the Germans were more lively after the break and Ricardo Costa had a terrific chance within two minutes of the restart, timing his run to perfection to get on the end of a corner, only to skew his volley high and wide.

Anderson was set up by Rooney but his left-foot strike from 18 yards was palmed away by the impressive-looking Benaglio.

It was then the German champs took the lead. Makoto Hasebe floated over a cross and 6ft 5inch Dzeko towered above Patrice Evra at the back-post to head past Kuszczak.

Giggs equalised with his 150th United goal just three minute later. His free-kick from the right hand corner of the area looked on target but it took a horrible deflection off the head of Christian Gentner to wrong-foot Benaglio and nestle in the corner.

If that was a fluke, Carrick's winner was a classy finish. Berbatov played in Giggs who poked the ball back for the England midfielder to curl in his first European goal for two-and-a-half years.

Fletcher replaced Valencia with 10 minutes left and substitute Obafemi Martins made a return to the English scene as Wolfsburg tried to hit back but United hung on for the win.

Fergie sure Wayne can Roo-l world

SMILE HIGH CLUB ... Wayne Rooney has a laugh during training

ALEX FERGUSON has challenged Wayne Rooney to follow Cristiano Ronaldo and become this season's World Player of the Year.
Ronaldo picked up the 2008-2009 accolade before departing Old Trafford to join Real Madrid.

Now Manchester United boss Ferguson wants Rooney to take the next step in his development and emulate both the Portuguese star and Kaka, who won the award the previous year.

Asked if Rooney can do it, Ferguson said: "Well, that's the challenge there now for every player.

"There are some great players out there. Kaka, Ronaldo and Messi are the best three at the moment and I think Wayne can get to that level if he keeps making progress.

"He is blessed with certain ingredients only certain great players have. He has that hunger and determination.

"They want to win every match, every training session. He is blessed with that and that will never change."

It is that effort which makes Ferguson convinced Rooney, 23, is worth every penny of the £100,000 a week he is paid.

He added: "You sometimes wonder about the criticism of the money players get paid. But then you look at the amount of effort Wayne puts into his work and he is worth every penny."

It was five years ago this week that Rooney made his spectacular debut for United, grabbing a hat-trick in a 6-2 Champions League win over Fenerbahce.

Tonight, at home to German champions Wolfsburg, he will make his 50th European appearance for the club.

Ferguson said: "It was a marvellous start to score a hat-trick on his debut. It was a remarkable feat. But since then his progress has never disappointed us.

"When we signed him as a kid we thought he would become a really top player and he is going in that direction."

Rooney also still wants to do the lot.

Ferguson declared: "He is a funny animal. He sees himself as a good centre-half and I'd not be against that.

"Oh, he is a coach now too, he tells me. A coach, a manager and a referee."

Utd join Chelsea in Cahill hunt

CAHILL ... watched by host of top clubs

MANCHESTER UNITED are the latest club to keep tabs on Bolton defender Gary Cahill.
Alex Ferguson's scouts saw him net his first goal for the Trotters during the Carling Cup win over West Ham last week.

Cahill, 23, has attracted interest from Chelsea, Juventus and AC Milan.

Now Fergie sees him as cover - and one day a possible replacement - for Rio Ferdinand.

England manager Fabio Capello has already given glowing references after calling him up to his squad for the World Cup qualifier against Kazakhstan in June.

But Bolton boss Gary Megson has vowed not to flog Cahill in January, with the player signing a new three-year deal this summer.

He said: "Football-wise, it would be suicide to sell him in January.

"We did brilliantly to remove an escape clause from his deal in the summer. Now we don't need to sell."

Manu will never say sorry!!

HORROR ... Van Persie is caught in the face by Adebayor's right boot

ROBIN VAN PERSIE reckons he will NEVER get an apology from Emmanuel Adebayor.
Manchester City striker Adebayor stamped on Van Persie's face at Eastlands.

The Arsenal ace said: "He has shown what he is like in the last couple of weeks. So, he had to do what he did. If I look in the mirror, I cannot blame myself."

Former Arsenal star Adebayor claimed he spoke to Dutchman Van Persie after the horror challenge two weeks ago.

But the Gunners striker insists no conversation took place after City's 4-2 win.

Adebayor escaped punishment during the match as ref Mark Clattenburg did not see the incident which left the Arsenal star with a cut on his cheek. But the official told the FA he would have shown a red card had he spotted it.

Van Persie added: "No, I don't expect an apology. My feelings are the same.

"I don't want to waste more time on Mr Adebayor."

Togo ace Adebayor - a £25million buy from Arsenal in the summer - scored in City's win and raced to celebrate in front of the Arsenal fans. The FA is still to decide upon a punishment for this.

Van Persie also admits he is aware that Adebayor could have been given more than a three-game ban for the stamp.

He said: "A referee at the start of the season came and explained that if they think it is worse than a three-game suspension, they will ban for four or five.

"But Adebayor got the ban for what he did because what he did was not right."

Ronaldo makes Real history

RECORD BREAKER ... Cristiano Ronaldo has scored in his first four league games for Real Madrid.

CRISTIANO RONALDO has made Real Madrid history by becoming the first player to score in his first four league games for the club.
The Portuguese winger, who joined the Spanish giants from Manchester United this summer in a world record £80million move, netted in the 2-0 win over Villarreal last night.

Ronaldo struck early after a brilliant turn on the halfway line saw him race towards the penalty area, step inside two defenders and drill a low 20-yard shot home.
Kaka slotted home a second-half penalty, his first for the club, to seal Madrid's fourth successive win of the season and pull them level with league leaders Barcelona.

MY BALL ... Michael Owen finds space to get in a header at goal last night

And he played a key role in a brilliantly worked 68th-minute goal for Welbeck.

Forward Welbeck, 18, was congratulated by Owen who would have been proud of the clinical finish.

It was a big relief to United after they played an hour with 10 men following Fabio's red card for a challenge that was more like a rugby tackle.

And, sadly for Wolves, the referee played only 19 seconds more than the indicated three minutes of stoppage time.

Owen's contribution this time was more low key than on Sunday but he still earned a pat on the back from boss Alex Ferguson.

Fergie said: "I told you right from the start Michael would be a winner for United.

"It was a great pass, the angle he gave Danny made it easy for him. The return pass he gave was tremendous.

"It was a fantastic goal with some great passing. I think one goal was always going to win it. Then we showed our resilience."

Ferguson chose a completely different side to the one who edged out neighbours City 4-3 at the weekend.

But United's players were still slow to get going and their old boy Sylvan Ebanks-Blake went close early on with a 20-yard shot.

Kevin Foley forced a smart save from Tomasz Kuszczak who was determined to make the most of his chance with Ben Foster rested.

United had offered little going forward and looked to be facing a real uphill task when Fabio was given his marching orders.

Segundo Castillo's 30th-minute pass was held up by Stefan Maierhofer allowing Michael Kightly to burst clear from the halfway line.

Brazilian Fabio, 19, was left floundering and eventually pulled the Wolves man to the ground when he was through.

It left ref Peter Walton with no choice but to send him off.

MICHAEL OWEN is flavour of the month at United.

The hitman set up starlet Danny Welbeck's winner as the Carling Cup holders saw off Wolves - despite being reduced to 10 men.

England hopeful Owen, 29, was handed only his second United start as reward for Sunday's dramatic derby strike against Manchester City.

From the resulting free-kick Kuszczak made a spectacular stop to deny David Jones.

Boss Mick McCarthy said: "Strangely I'd have preferred the game to stay 11 v 11.

"United have done it before against 10 men and are adept at getting back and then picking teams off."

Ferguson added: "Prior to the sending off they were a handful. But after that we seemed better organised.

"We showed a good spirit, it was difficult to play for a full hour with only 10."

Wolves must have headed back to the Midlands kicking themselves for missing a great chance to record a notable win at Old Trafford.

McCarthy admitted: "Even with 10 men, they have shown us what it's all about. The problem is our belief in beating a team with 10 men."

Owen's big chance to score again came just before the break. He peeled off his man but a header from Gary Neville's cross was too tame.

Back at the other end, an horrendous slice by full-back Neville gave Jones a gift of a chance but he could not keep his effort down and it sailed high over the bar.

Wolves looked likeliest to nick the tie early in the second half but Christophe Berra wasted a golden headed chance.

Wes Brown then made a brilliant last-ditch tackle to deny Karl Henry after Ebanks-Blake had flicked it on.

It proved a turning point as United then enjoyed their best spell.

First, Nani's cross almost embarrassed Marcus Hahnemann and hit the post.

But in their next attack, United broke the deadlock with a superb move involving Darron Gibson and Michael Carrick.

Welbeck picked it up on the edge of the box and exchanged a quick-fire one-two with Owen before beating Hahnemann with a superb finish into the far corner.

The local-born forward - who burst on to the scene 12 months ago in this competition - looks well worth keeping an eye on.

Fergie thinks he could go to the World Cup finals with England this summer - it may be a long shot, but do not rule it out.

Kevin Doyle almost forced extra-time with a couple of late efforts but there was to be no last-gasp drama this time.

The board revealed only three minutes of added time - much to the annoyance of Wolves fans who chanted 'We want six'. Nice try.

1.Man Utd 4 Man City 3

MICHAEL OWEN slotted a dramatic injury-time winner to see Manchester United steal the local bragging rights at Old Trafford.
The England striker came off the bench to cap a classic encounter, after Craig Bellamy's second goal had looked to have stolen a point late on for City.

It was Wayne Rooney who opened the scoring in the second minute of the match, before Gareth Barry swept in his first goal for Mark Hughes' side.

Bellamy bagged a brace in a pulsating second half, after Darren Fletcher had twice given United the lead thanks to pinpoint crosses from Ryan Giggs.

And the veteran winger's vision then set up the winner deep into added time, with Owen coolly poking the ball past Shay Given in predatory fashion.

Obama extends his greetings to Muslims on Eid Al-Fitr

Obama has sent Eid al-Fitr greetings to Muslims around the world on the eve of the festival that marks the completion of Ramadan.
Sunday, 20 September 2009 11:15

US President Barack Obama has sent Eid al-Fitr greetings to Muslims around the world on the eve of the festival that marks the completion of Ramadan.

"As Muslims in the United States and around the world complete the month of Ramzan and celebrate Eidul Fitr, Michelle and I would like to extend our personal greetings on this joyous occasion," he said.

"Throughout the month, Muslim communities collect and distribute zakatul fitr so that all Muslims are able to participate in this day of celebration. As I said in Cairo, my administration is working to ensure that Muslims are able to fulfil their charitable obligations not just during Ramadan, but throughout the year. On behalf of the American people, we congratulate Muslims in the United States and around the world on this blessed day. Eid Mubarak," he added.

Obama shed light on the rituals of the holy month of Ramadan, describing them as "30 days and nights of devotion." He remarked that "even on this festive occasion, Muslims remember those less fortunate, including those impacted by poverty, hunger, conflict, and disease."

In a separate message, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton also greeted Muslims on Eid, reiterating the "US' desire to seek a new beginning with Muslims" around the world, one based on mutual interest and mutual respect.

"In 1996, my husband and I were privileged to host the first ever White House Eid celebration, which has now become a tradition. And this year, I hosted an Iftar at the State Department, with Muslims and non-Muslims attending. We hope that reinforces every year that all faiths have a home here in the United States," she added.

WENGER BLASTS NEW PREM RULE

ARSENAL boss Arsene Wenger has slamed the Premier League's new rules on home-grown players — claiming it will weaken the English game.
From next season all Premier League clubs will be required to have eight home-grown players out of a squad of 25.

They do not necessarily have to be British but have trained for three years under the age of 21 in England or Wales.

Wenger, whose Gunners side is often criticised for having no English players in it, does not believe introducing such limits would improve the current state of the game.

He said: "I am not in favour of it and I said that many times.

"I feel that when you want to see the best players in the best league in the world, you have to be open.

"To accept competition — and we live for competition — it is not to accept artificial rules and that is why I am against it."
